Cardiac Assessment Fast Track (ACA)
This module includes a review of cardiac anatomy and physiology, risk factors, history taking, and interview techniques. Assessment tips and interventions for the patient with chest pain, common causes of chest pain, heart sounds, and how the blood pressure works (preload and afterload) are discussed briefly
Cardiac Heart Sounds and the Valves (ACA)
Cardiac Valves and Heart Sounds discusses the basic anatomy of the adult cardiac valve system, differentiates atrioventricular (AV) and semi lunar (SL) valves, the function of each in relation to heart sounds, and their location. Heart sound types are also briefly described (s1, s2, s3, s4, and murmurs).
Cardiac Interventions and Tests (ACA)
This module includes a brief review of electrocardiograms, treadmill stress testing, and echocardiograms. CPK and troponin are compared with a description of how elevated cardiac enzyme measurements indicate heart damage. The use of CT scans, MRIs, and stress myoviews in diagnosing the extent of cardiac damage are also reviewed. Finally, this module covers an explanation of cardiac catheterization and CABG. The purpose of this module is to facilitate knowledge and confidence in the care of the cardiac patient.
Cardiovascular Assessment (APA)
This module discusses the fundamental components of a basic cardiovascular assessment including an evaluation of the skin, capillary refill, heart rate, and blood pressure. It also reviews signs and symptoms associated with hypertension and hypotension, as well as indications for orthostatic blood pressure testing. Treatment of chest pain and the role of cardiac accessories (pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, etc.) are also discussed. This course has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in your daily cardiovascular assessment.
Block Party & Other Cardiac Arrhythmias
This module is designed to guide the nurse on a journey through the cardiac conduction system. As you 'walk' through the heart, you'll better understand the cardiac conduction system and the underlying physiology of cardiac dysrhythmias. Upon completion of this module, you'll be 'shocked' at how well you understand the cardiac conduction system in relation to the patient's presentation. This module is not to learn how to read strips, but to understand the cardiac conduction system in relation to the heart and apply this knowledge into your daily physical assessment.
Myocardial Ischemia and Injury (ACA)
This module includes a review of the coronary arteries and their function. The material compares myocardial ischemia and injury, angina, unstable angina, and myocardial infarction. Atypical chest pain symptoms commonly seen in women, the elderly and silent MI patients are also reviewed. The author relates real life experiences at the bedside to the underlying physiology to promote the development of critical thinking skills.
Understanding Diuretics (UCM)
This module is not intended to be used as a pharmaceutical reference, but as a comprehensive guide to understand how diuretic medications work to improve heart function. Understanding Diuretics has the goal of facilitating knowledge and confidence in the care of the cardiac patient.
